State Meet Highlights
Top Performances:
- Freshman Hayden West of Collinsville jumped 16-0 to win the Class 5A pole vault with a meet record.
- Jacquez Henderson of Lawton McArhur won the Class 5A 100 meters in 10.84w and the 200 meters in 22.84 (-4.1w). He also helped his relay teams win the 4x100 (41.58/41.45 prelim) and the 4x200 (1:27.00, state meet record).
- Bryce Balenseifen from Deer Creek won the Class 5A titles in the 1,600 (4:22.35) and the 3,200 (9:42.68) and was second in the 800 with 1:54.06. He also helped his team win the 4x800 relay (7:55.51).
- Malique Lytle from Shawnee, a junior, won the Class 5A boys titles in the 400 (48.90) and the 800 (1:52.79).
- Rebecca Brewer from Duncan swept the hurdles in the Class 5A meet with 15.22/45.82 and also anchored her team to victory in the 4x400 relay.
- Brother-sister combo Daniel and Adrena Mazzei of Berryhill rule Class 4A distance running these days. On top of their dual cross country titles, Daniel (soph) and Adrena (junior) both doubled in the 1,600 and 3,200 with victories.
- Junior Carsyn Spurgeon of Vinita focused on the 200 meters this year and defended her Class 4A title in that event with 24.33 (3.3w). She also powered her school to relay wins in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 (where the points are double). So she was a huge factor in 70 of her team’s 92 points (and team title).
- In Class 3A, Brayden Brock of Kansas and Austin Swann of Chisholm – both Oklahoma State signees – went 1-2 in the 400 meters. Brock ran 48.95 and Swann 49.52. In the 800 it was Swann winning in 1:57.46 and Brock second in 1:57.75. Brock was also fifth in the 200. Swann led Chisholm to victories in the 4x400 and 4x800.
- Sophomore Taniyah McMillan of Millwood doubled 12.19/24.81 to sweep the Class 3A sprints. The 12.19 is a state leader. Teammate Breonna Hall, a junior, won the 400 meters in 57.04 (state-leading 56.89 prelim) and was second in the 200 meters. They also teamed up for a 4x100 relay victory and pushed Millwood to the team title.
Top Teams:
Top Competition: The boys 4A shot put featured the top two throwers in the state and a pair of college football recruits. Kaden Jackson of Kingfisher threw 59 feet, 8 inches to win the title. Runner-up Austin Cantrell of Roland threw 59-0.50. Nobody else was within five feet of them. Jackson is headed to the University of Wyoming to play football, Cantrell is headed to Arkansas. (Roland lost to Kingfisher in last fall’s (2014) quarterfinals).
