Sprint doubles by Patton, Jackson stand out

 

State Meet Highlights

 
Oklahoma's two largest classes competed at Yukon High School, a little bit west of Oklahoma City, a week after the 4A/3A and 2A/1A meets. The biggest highlights were in the sprints, where Jade Patton and Tyler Jackson both had impressive doubles.


Top Performances:

 
- Jade Patton of Edmond North was the dominant girls sprinter in the state this season and won the 6A 100 in US#14 11.70 and the 200 in US#34 24.19.

 
- Tyler Jackson of 5A Claremore scored an impressive pair of wins in the 200 (21.49) and the 400 (US#9 46.99).

 
- Bryce Balenseifen of Deer Creek tripled on the track in the 5A meet, taking the 800 (1:52.98), the 1600 (4:19.77) and the 3200 (10:00.77).

 
- Ben Barrett of Norman North proved he was the top distance runner in the state, winning the 6A 1600 (4:16.87) and 3200 (9:27.37).


- Sophomore Schuyler Wood of Putnam City won the 6A girls long jump with 19-7.50 (nwi).


- Tommy Dial of Jenks broke the 6A meet record in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-1. His season's best height is 17-1.50.

- Sophomore Carsyn Spurgeon of Vinita was the star of the 4A meet, winning the 200 (24.81) and 400 (56.88) and running on two winning relays.


Top Teams:


Edmond, a suburb ok Oklahoma City, is the hotbed of track in the state as the team results bore out. In the 6A team races, Edmond Memorial's girls were big winners with 148 points. Jenks (near Tulsa) won the boys title with 141 points and settled the matter with 20 big points in the 4x400 relay. Edmond Memorial was second with 132 points.


In Class 5A, Deer Creek of Edmond swept the team titles. The girls scored 110 points and the boys put up 118.


Top Competition: The boys 6A 200 final produced a photo-finish close race between junior Ty Smith of Stillwater and sophomore Brett Tye of Jenks. Both were timed in 21.74. Inspection of the photo gave the win to Smith, 21.732 to 21.734. The third and fourth place finishers were within .07 seconds of Smith as well.


Record-breakers: A few long-standing meet records went down in flames, including Grove's Michaela Warner breaking a 28-year-oldrecord in the 3200 with 11:10.47. Booker T. Washington of Tulsa broke a 20-year-old meet record in the boys 4x100 with 41.04, one of the fastest times overall in state history.
