Turner takes another crack at the HJ record By Mary Albl of DyeStat The Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association 6A state track and field championships Saturday provided Yukon senior Vernon Turner another opportunity to reach new heights. Turner easily won the high jump title, clearing 7 feet, 4 inches at Miller Stadium. The University of Oklahoma commit followed with three attempts at 7-7.25, which would have been an all-time national high school record, but he didn't clear it. He finished the day as a three-time state high jump champ and snagged a runner-up finish in the long jump (23-7.25). Turner leads the nation with a high jump clearance of 7-6. "I'll cherish these moments with my team and at this school for the rest of my life," Turner told newsok.com Saturday. In the long jump, Westmoore sophomore Anthony Riley set a 6A meet record with a leap of 24-5.25. In the throws, Patrick Larrison of Moore swept the 6A shot put (63-3) and discus (184-7). On the track, Jenks' Matt Young won the 3,200 (9:12.51) and 1,600 (4:19.31). In girls 6A action, Bixby's Brandee Presley won the 100 (11.84) and 200 (24.21), with Charles Page's Cheyenne Walden claiming the 1,600 (4:57.07) and 3,200 (10:53.54). Jenks' Ally Ryan ran a personal-best time of 2:09.28 to win the 800. In the field events, Union's Tyrzah Stinson won the shot put (41-2.25) and discus (149-7). In 5A action, Del City's Micah Brewer impressed in the sprints, winning the 100 (10.9) and 200 (22.21). Teammate Gregory Whitenburg claimed the high jump crown, clearing 6-8.
